My master’s thesis project was an exploration of layers of public space as explored through the design of a library and a master plan for a housing development. I designed the library not only as a place for storing books but also as a building to celebrate the book as a physical object and encourage exploration of the collection.

In order to do this, I took parts of the library and lifted them up, transforming the book stacks from a horizontal room to a giant wall of books. The books are accessible from walkways on the front side of the wall, while stairs and elevators weave along the opposite side. The visitor moves back and forth through the wall of books itself as he ascends through the library to the reading room and meeting spaces on the upper floors. Along the way, he can pass through the books into one of many study nooks overlooking the housing courtyard.
